Makassar (ANTARA) – The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) has issued an early warning for extreme weather in several regions of South Sulawesi, valid from 24 February to 1 March 2026.

The Regional IV Large Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BBMKG) in a statement released in Makassar on Wednesday, stated that the potential for extreme weather could trigger various hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, flash floods, landslides, strong winds, fallen trees, and high waves.

The BMKG explained that the increase in rainfall is triggered by a combination of atmospheric dynamics, including the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin waves, Rossby waves, and wind convergence, which support the growth of rain clouds in the South Sulawesi region.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur in North Luwu, Pinrang, Sidrap, Soppeng, Bone, Sinjai, Jeneponto, Bantaeng, and Bulukumba.

In addition to heavy rain, the BMKG also warned of the potential for strong winds in the western and southern parts of South Sulawesi.

In coastal areas, the public is advised to be aware of waves reaching heights of 1.25 to 2.5 metres, which may occur in the waters of Pinrang, Barru, Makassar, Pangkajene Islands, Selayar Islands, Bulukumba, Takabonerate Islands, and Jeneponto.

The public is also asked not to litter and to continue monitoring official weather information from the BMKG.

The latest weather information can be accessed by the public 24 hours a day through the BMKG’s official channels and available information services.
