Meta’s flagship Ray-Ban smart glasses, which feature a display layer, are reportedly receiving a major update that includes support for gesture-based writing. According to a report by GSM Arena on Sunday (17/5), the ‘Neural Handwriting’ feature can be utilised on iOS and Android devices, as well as within Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and mobile message notifications to search for contacts, send, and reply to messages.

To utilise this feature, owners of the Ray-Ban smart glasses must wear the Neural Band accessory, which is included in the retail package of the glasses, priced at 800 USD (approximately Rp14 million). Powered by advanced sEMG technology, the wristband is capable of recognising a user’s finger movements as they ‘write’ specific letters on surfaces such as a table, palm, or thigh.

Meta is also enhancing Maps support with richer search results, pedestrian navigation covering the entire United States as well as major global cities including London, Paris, and Rome, saved home and office locations, and voice navigation. Furthermore, Meta is opening access to the Ray-Ban smart glasses to third-party developers. Developers can use the SDK Device Access Toolkit for iOS and Android to add custom interfaces to native applications or create new applications specifically for the device. Developers can also create web-based applications that function effectively on Meta’s flagship smart glasses. Several users have already discovered ways to play YouTube videos on the Ray-Ban smart glasses, while the early application community has demonstrated uses ranging from aviation and shopping to transport navigation and gaming.
