Meta, the technology company and parent of Facebook, is reported to be considering a plan to reduce approximately 20 per cent of its total workforce. According to reports, Meta executives have directed a number of senior company leaders to begin formulating plans for workforce reductions. However, to date, neither the implementation timeline nor the precise number of employees who will be affected by the redundancies has been determined.

In response, a Meta spokesperson dismissed the report as speculation regarding an approach that remains purely theoretical.

Based on the company’s latest financial statements, Meta’s workforce stood at 78,865 employees as of 31 December 2025. During the same period, Meta also reported strong financial performance, with revenue of nearly 60 billion US dollars in the fourth quarter of 2025 and exceeding 200 billion US dollars throughout 2025.

Staff reductions are not new for the technology company. In early 2026, Meta cut approximately 1,000 employees, particularly from the Reality Labs division, which handles virtual reality technology development and metaverse projects.

Previously, in early 2025, Meta also conducted redundancies affecting approximately 5 per cent of its total workforce, following smaller waves of staff cuts during the same period.

Amid the workforce reduction discussions, Meta is known to be substantially increasing its investment in artificial intelligence (AI). The company is reported to be allocating significant funds to acquire several AI-based start-ups, including Moltbook, a social network designed for AI agents, and Manus, which focuses on developing AI agents for automating various tasks.

This move demonstrates that Meta is reinforcing its strategy in AI technology development as part of the company’s broader business transformation.
