Meta to Introduce Third-Party Apps on Its Smart Glasses
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Meta is now granting access to third-party developers to create applications and games that can be displayed on the screen of its smart glasses device, the Meta Ray-Ban Display.
According to an Engadget report on Thursday (14/5), Meta is enabling third-party developers to experiment with applications that support the display and the device’s Neural Band controller.
The company stated that the platform will support applications with accompanying Android or iOS mobile apps and those compatible with web-based applications.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display uses a screen with a 20-degree field of view, not fully immersive like other standalone Augmented Reality (AR) or extended reality glasses.
Meta appears to be seeking applications suitable for the monocular display.
Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, shared a video about one of the early applications called “Darkroom Buddy”, an interactive guide for the film developing process that can be used as an easily viewable reference on the glasses’ screen.
The company stated that developers can also create media streaming applications, real-time data displays such as match scores or status updates, and micro-applications for the smart glasses.
A video shared by Meta includes several examples of games that can be played using the Ray-Ban Display, such as chess, Snake, and brick-breaking games.
The smart glasses are already equipped with puzzle games. The addition of third-party applications is seen as expanding the functionality of the $800 USD smart glasses.
However, the company has not stated when third-party applications will be widely available to Ray-Ban Display users.
After introducing its smart glasses product, Meta added features such as a built-in teleprompter and handwriting features.
The neural handwriting feature allows users to reply to messages by drawing letters with finger movements.
Additionally, the company has introduced a feature that allows users to record what appears on the device screen and share it with others.
Meta has also introduced live translation text for calls made via Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
