Meta Shuts 185,000 Child Accounts to Comply with PP Tunas, Says Kemkomdigi
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) has stated that technology company Meta has closed around 185,000 child accounts over a two-month period as part of compliance efforts with the Child Protection Regulation (PP Tunas).
Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, said during a meeting at the Kemkomdigi Office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday that this figure represents the latest report received by the government from Meta, which oversees social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
“185,000 child accounts were closed in two months,” Alexander stated.
With this addition, the total number of child accounts closed by digital platforms in compliance with PP Tunas has reached more than 4.8 million accounts, with a breakdown of 4.1 million accounts on TikTok, 600,000 accounts on YouTube, and 185,000 accounts on Meta-owned platforms.
“The total means around 4.7 million accounts previously, plus 185,000, so approximately 4.8 million accounts,” Alexander explained.
Kemkomdigi has urged other digital platforms that have not yet submitted periodic reports regarding child protection measures and account enforcement to fulfil their obligations.
“No reports have been received from the other platforms. We have asked them to provide routine reports, but they have not been submitted,” Alexander said.
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stated that 200 digital platforms have reported their self-assessments regarding their risk profiles to the government as part of the implementation of PP Tunas.
“We are reporting that approximately 200 platforms have submitted their respective risk profile assessments to Kemkomdigi,” Meutya said.
The digital platforms that have reported their self-assessments include e-commerce, online gaming, and entertainment services. The government is currently evaluating these self-assessment reports to determine the risk profile of each platform.
