Meta Reveals Plan to Lay Off 8,000 Employees Next Month, Opts to Strengthen AI Infrastructure

A surprising announcement has come from the global technology company, Meta Platforms Inc, as it takes a major step in its business transformation journey. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram has reported plans for redundancies affecting around 8,000 employees starting in May 2026. Citing Reuters, this number equates to about 10 per cent of the company’s total global workforce. The first wave of redundancies is scheduled for 20 May 2026. This move is part of a wider restructuring plan. Additionally, workforce efficiency is reportedly part of a strategy for overall efficiency while accelerating investments in artificial intelligence (AI). Under CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s leadership, Meta is indeed pouring significant investments into strengthening its artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company is seeking to overhaul its internal structure to make it leaner, relying on AI-based work systems. Meta’s decision to cut thousands of employees reflects the transformation trend currently underway among players in the US technology industry. Major companies in Uncle Sam’s country are beginning to shift focus from workforce expansion to technology-based efficiency. Sources familiar with Meta’s redundancy plans have indicated that the company still has opportunities for further cuts in the second half of this year, although details on timing and numbers have not yet been decided. This is in line with the rapid and complex developments in AI technology. Despite the redundancies, the company’s financial condition is considered solid. Meta Platforms recorded revenue of more than US$200 billion and profits of around US$60 billion throughout 2025, alongside the company’s aggressive spending on AI development. For information, Meta last conducted major redundancies in the period from 2022 to early 2023 in a programme called the year of efficiency. At that time, the company cut around 21,000 employees amid performance pressures and adjustments following the business surge during the pandemic. Now, Meta’s policy direction focuses on simplifying the organisational structure. The company wants fewer layers of management as well as increased productivity through AI technology support. In recent weeks, Meta has also restructured several teams, including in the Reality Labs division. In fact, the company has transferred several engineers to a new unit, Applied AI, which is tasked with developing AI agents capable of writing code and performing complex tasks independently.
