Meta Reportedly to Begin AI Chip Production in September 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Meta is reportedly in the process of starting production of the latest version of its custom artificial intelligence (AI) chip in September 2026, in an effort to reduce graphics processing unit costs amid a shortage of components.
TechCrunch on Thursday (9 July), citing a Reuters report based on an internal company memo, said that at least one chip had successfully passed the testing stage in approximately six weeks.
Meta is working with Broadcom to design the chip. The manufacturing process will be carried out by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
The company is reportedly set to use memory from Samsung, storage media from Sandisk, and fibre-optic devices from Sumitomo Electric.
Some of the chips have already been put to use, whilst the remainder will be deployed this year and next.
Meta is applying a modular approach to chip development so that it can adapt the chips to the continuously evolving demands of AI computing.
“Each generation of MTIA is built upon the previous generation by leveraging modular chiplets, adopting the latest hardware technology, and being developed on a faster cycle,” Meta said.
Meta plans to use the chips to train AI models used in content ranking and recommendation systems, broader AI workloads, and the inference processes supporting its applications.
Meta has been developing its own AI chips since 2023.
The company has also continued to increase investment to strengthen the computing capacity required for AI development.
In April, the company estimated that capital spending throughout 2026 would reach 125 billion US dollars (approximately Rp2,259 trillion) to 145 billion US dollars (around Rp2,621 trillion), with the majority allocated to AI infrastructure.
