Meta Releases "Content Protection" Feature; Facebook Creators Can Fight Copy-Paste Accounts
The phenomenon of copycat accounts and duplicated content has long been a source of complaint among creators on social media. Frequently, videos or photographs created with considerable effort are re-uploaded by other accounts, often without permission.
To address this issue, Meta has launched an upgraded version of its Content Protection feature. This feature is designed to help creators on Facebook more easily detect copycat accounts and content that mimics their work.
According to Meta’s official Meta Newsroom page, the feature represents an enhancement of Content Protection, a tool previously introduced by Meta to help creators protect their work on the platform.
Through the more advanced Content Protection version, creators can view content suspected of copying their work and report it more easily from a single dashboard.
This effort is not without reason. Meta reports that content imitation practices remain fairly prevalent on its social media platform.
Throughout 2025 alone, Meta claims to have deleted more than 20 million accounts that impersonated popular creators.
Following various enforcement actions, reports of account plagiarism against major creators have reportedly dropped by approximately 33 per cent.
In addition to introducing new tools for reporting copycat accounts, the social media giant based in Menlo Park, California, USA has also updated its guidelines regarding original content on Facebook.
Under the new rules, content is considered original if it is created or recorded directly by the creator who owns the account.
Conversely, content that merely copies the work of others with minor modifications, such as adding text, changing video speed, or adding additional frames, is no longer considered the creator’s own work.
Such content will be given lower priority in feeds and reels, meaning its reach or engagement may be considerably smaller.
By contrast, creators who produce their own content or rework content with added creative value, for example through analysis, new explanations, or different perspectives, still have the opportunity to achieve wider distribution.
