As announced on Meta Indonesia’s official website, accessed on Friday, the new policy is to align with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 regarding Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP Tunas).

PP Tunas has restricted children’s access to social media platforms for their safety and security. Before PP Tunas, the minimum user age set by Meta to access Facebook, Instagram, and Threads was set at 13 years old.

“We are committed to supporting a safe and age-appropriate experience while complying with the new age requirement,” Meta Indonesia said in its statement.

The change will affect all users under 16 years old, the minimum access age mandated by PP Tunas, the company said as they promised to issue notifications before enforcing the age restriction to affected accounts.

The company is offering age verification and appeal mechanisms to all users above 16 years old who are mistakenly affected by the restriction, allowing them to restore their social media accounts.

“We are cooperating with the Communications and Digital Ministry in our work to align and prepare with the implementation of the new policy according to prevailing laws,” Meta Indonesia remarked.

PP Tunas, which came into effect on March 28, 2026, restricts children’s access to digital platforms, including those categorized as high-risk such as Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox.

As of Thursday (April 9) at 5:50 p.m., Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, and Bigo Live have fully complied with the regulation, while TikTok and Roblox are considered to be in partial compliance.

Meanwhile, Google, which operates YouTube, is noted as having yet to show a commitment to complying with the regulation.
