Meta Launches Instants App, Snapchat Rival?
Meta is once again attempting to attract young users by launching a spin-off app from Instagram called Instants. This app serves as a standalone platform focused on sharing raw, unedited temporary photos, akin to Snapchat’s concept.
Instants is designed to open directly to the camera upon use, allowing users to capture and send photos that disappear after being viewed. Embracing the slogan “real life, real quick”, the app emphasises simplicity and privacy.
In concept, Instants is an evolution of the Shots feature that Meta previously tested on Instagram. That feature enabled users to send filter-free photos viewable only once by recipients before vanishing. This approach combines BeReal’s spontaneity with Snapchat’s temporary messaging mechanics.
Instants has been in development for several months, with initial references appearing in Instagram’s back-end code in February. The app is now ready to be introduced in various regions as a direct rival to Snapchat, as reported by Media Social Today on Monday (27/4/2026).
