Meta Introduces 'AI Mode' on Facebook, Leveraging Platform Data

Meta has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature called ‘AI Mode’, a novel way to search for information on Facebook that relies on Meta AI and data from posts across Meta’s platforms, including Reels. This ‘AI Mode’ allows users to ask questions in plain language, with answers generated based on topics currently being discussed by people. The launch follows the quiet release of an app called Forum in May 2026, which is styled like the discussion platform Reddit but equipped with an AI-based ‘Ask’ feature. This feature enables users to pose questions and receive answers drawn from discussions happening across Facebook Groups. Because the AI summarises content from ordinary users rather than verified sources, there is a risk that the information shared may be outdated or potentially misleading.

Beyond ‘AI Mode’, Meta has also introduced new editing tools on Facebook, giving users a space to experiment with collage cuts and transition effects for their video montages. AI-based photo presets have also been added, allowing users to alter the look of their photos, including hairstyles, clothing, and accessories. These updates add to a growing list of AI features Meta has offered in recent months. In February, the company introduced a feature for users to express themselves through animated profile pictures that bring static photos to life. In March, Meta brought AI features to Facebook Marketplace, enabling automatic replies to buyer messages on behalf of sellers. More recently, Facebook introduced an AI assistant for creators that provides personalised suggestions to make content creation more efficient. Overall, Meta’s continuous addition of AI features aims to make Facebook more engaging and useful, and represents one way the company is diversifying its methods of generating revenue.
