Meta Begins Replacing Human Moderators with AI

Meta’s approach to maintaining content cleanliness on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, is beginning to change. No longer fully reliant on human moderators, the company is now depending on artificial intelligence (AI) systems as the front line in screening content. This move marks a significant shift in how Meta’s social media platforms manage billions of uploads every day. Behind the scenes, tasks once performed by humans—from reviewing sensitive content to detecting violations—are gradually being transferred to machines. In its statement, Meta said that over the next few years, AI systems will take on a larger role in content moderation. The company stated that it will begin implementing more advanced AI systems across all Meta applications. “As part of this process, we will reduce our reliance on third-party vendors for content enforcement and focus more on strengthening our systems and internal workforce,” Meta stated. However, this approach is expected not to last long. Human workers are faced with an ever-increasing volume of content, while moderation work itself is repetitive and can cause mental strain for workers. This is where AI’s role becomes more superior. This technology is considered capable of working non-stop, especially when handling large-scale content volumes. Meta assesses that AI technology is suitable for tasks such as repeatedly reviewing graphic content. The system is also able to detect evolving violation patterns, such as the sale of illegal drugs or scams on its platforms. Nevertheless, Meta said that human workers have not been completely abandoned. Meta emphasised that human moderators are still needed as overseers and guides for AI systems going forward. The announcement of the transition from human labour to AI machines coincides with efficiency issues within Meta. The latest reports indicate that the California, US-based company plans to cut up to 20% of its workforce. At the same time, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly stated in interviews that AI has the potential to replace various types of jobs, including mid-level engineer roles. The use of AI in content moderation is not without risks. Not long ago, a security incident involving a Meta AI agent was reported. Reports stated that an internal AI system accidentally leaked sensitive employee data.
