Mesuji Regent Demands Proportional Punishment for Tapir Killers in Lampung as Deterrent

Police have arrested four of the six perpetrators involved in the killing of a tapir that appeared on the Sumatran Highway (Jalinsum) in Mesuji Regency, Lampung. Mesuji Regent Elfianah stated that the actions of the perpetrators in killing the protected animal cannot be tolerated.

“We deeply regret and deplore the actions of the community members who killed this protected animal. This act not only harms our biodiversity but also violates the applicable law,” Elfianah said, as quoted by detikSumbagsel on Monday (6/7/2026).

Elfianah stated that the Mesuji Regency Government fully supports the steps taken by the Mesuji Police, who have secured four suspects in the case. According to her, the perpetrators must receive a proportional punishment to create a deterrent effect.

“We fully support the authorities, in this case the Mesuji Police, who have arrested the perpetrators. They must be processed according to the prevailing law and receive a proportional punishment as a deterrent,” she said.

The Mesuji Regency Government, Elfianah added, will also strengthen educational efforts for the community regarding the importance of protecting endangered wildlife. This effort is expected to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

“The Mesuji Regency Government will continue to enhance wildlife conservation efforts and provide education to the community so that they care more about preserving nature and the wildlife in our region,” she stated.
