A member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from the PDI Perjuangan faction, Hardiyanto Kenneth, responded to the phenomenon of new migrants arriving in the capital after Eid. He advised that new migrants must possess skills.

“New migrants must truly prepare themselves well. The main provision they must have is skills, competencies, and clear goals,” Kenneth stated in his remarks on Saturday (21/3), as reported by Detik.

According to Kenneth, the increase in new migrants in DKI Jakarta following the post-Eid return flow is an unavoidable phenomenon. Jakarta has long been a magnet for opportunities and hopes for people from various other regions.

However, he reminded that Jakarta’s openness does not mean without limits or direction. New migrants should at least have certain skills or competencies if they wish to try their luck in Jakarta.

According to the Member of Commission C of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, mere recklessness is not enough to come to Jakarta. New migrants must have a solid plan and the intention to contribute productively, not just trying their fortune.

Furthermore, Kenneth encouraged new migrants to bring an investment spirit, no matter how small. He believes that such steps will greatly help the economy while supporting the Jakarta Government’s programmes.

“If possible, coming to Jakarta should also bring the spirit to strive. For example, by starting independent businesses, empowering MSMEs, or even creating jobs,” Kenneth said.

In addition, Kenneth highlighted the potential for social problems to arise if urbanisation is not accompanied by readiness. He hopes that these new migrants do not become a burden on Jakarta.

“I do not want to see migrants who end up becoming Pak Ogah, cart humans, or even getting involved in criminal acts. This must be a collective concern,” Kenneth stated.

Besides harming individuals, Kenneth said, such conditions will also impact public order and the image of Jakarta as a metropolitan city.

However, Kenneth emphasised that Jakarta remains open to anyone who wants to come and strive. As long as these migrants have readiness, responsibility, and clear goals.

Kenneth continued that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government together with the DPRD ranks will continue to push for more directed urbanisation policies.

This is done through strengthening the economy in the regions of origin, improving workforce skills, to social oversight in the DKI area.

“We believe that with good intentions and hard work, migrants can become part of the solution, not a burden. Jakarta is not just a place to seek a livelihood, but also a space to contribute and grow together,” Kenneth said.
