PT Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk (MDKA) is utilising a supply of clean electricity from the Bakaru Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) for operations at the Pani Gold Mine in Gorontalo.

Through a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) purchase scheme from PT PLN (Persero), the company can expand the use of renewable energy in its operational units.

President Director of Merdeka Copper Gold, Albert Saputro, explained that energy transition and environmental management are key to the company’s operational development.

He emphasised that this commitment is the company’s effort to promote more efficient, low-emission, and sustainable mining operations for the national mining industry.

“As we develop Merdeka’s strategic projects, we continue to promote more efficient, low-emission, and sustainable mining operations. This step is part of the company’s long-term commitment to supporting responsible mining practices,” Albert stated in a written release, quoted on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

The implementation of clean electricity at the gold mine, managed by MDKA’s subsidiary PT Merdeka Gold Resources Tbk (EMAS), has been effective since 1 January 2026.

The use of energy from the PLTA follows the example of the Tujuh Bukit Gold Mine in Banyuwangi, which previously adopted a similar scheme through the purchase of renewable energy certificates since 2022.

In addition to REC usage, the Merdeka group has also integrated solar panel systems at the Wetar Copper Mine and the SCM Nickel Mine in Sulawesi as supporting energy sources for operations.

The company has also mandated all subsidiaries to use B40 fuel in mining areas to support decarbonisation targets.

In terms of fuel efficiency, optimisation of energy use at the SCM Nickel Mine recorded savings of 563,293 litres of B40 throughout 2025. This step aligns with the company’s ambition to operate an integrated nickel mine and smelter to supply raw materials for the global electric vehicle market.

On the environmental management side, MDKA has carried out land reclamation of 49.60 hectares in the mining area throughout 2025, bringing the total accumulated reclamation to 143.56 hectares. The company also runs a river basin (DAS) rehabilitation programme covering an area of 6,084 hectares outside the mining area.

Due to these various initiatives, Merdeka Copper Gold has maintained an ‘A’ rating in MSCI ESG Ratings for three consecutive years. This achievement makes the company the only one in the diversified metals and mining sector in Indonesia to consistently obtain that rating.
