Mercedes-Benz Patents Floating Vehicle Technology
Mercedes-Benz has patented a technology that enables off-road vehicles to float and move across water surfaces by utilising their wheels as a means of propulsion when traversing bodies of water.
According to reports from Motor1, the patent describes a system for two-axle passenger vehicles capable of adjusting various vehicle functions during river crossings. The technology includes a specialised mode for water travel that manages the vehicle from the moment it enters the water, through the floating phase, following a predetermined path, and until it returns to land.
Mercedes also utilises a range of sensors and navigation systems to assist the vehicle in reading its surroundings. Within the patent, the system can direct the vehicle to face the current and adjust wheel rotation to help maintain its position.
The technology also features an ‘anchor mode’ concept. This system uses GPS and sensors to detect the direction of the current, subsequently adjusting the vehicle’s position and wheel rotation to prevent it from being carried too far by the flow.
An inflatable device can be stored within the vehicle and deployed when a water crossing is required. With this concept, Mercedes does not need to add propellers or specialised propulsion systems as seen in conventional amphibious vehicles.
Motor1 notes that the technology in the patent does not necessarily mean that Mercedes will immediately begin producing floating vehicles. Nevertheless, the technology demonstrates how Mercedes is attempting to integrate wheel drive systems, active suspension, sensors, and software to enhance vehicle capabilities when facing extreme terrain.
