Mount Merbabu National Park Office has officially announced the temporary closure of the Thekelan climbing route from 3 to 7 June 2026. The policy was enacted to respect local religious ceremonies and prepare for the Merbabu Sky Race (MSR) event. This follows a request letter from Karang Taruna Ngudi Luhur in Thekelan Hamlet, Batur Village, Getasan Subdistrict, Semarang Regency. During the closure, all climbing, camping, and tourist activities via the Thekelan route will be suspended. Visitors with existing climbing plans are advised to adjust their schedules or choose alternative open routes. All prospective climbers must book online via the official Mount Merbabu National Park website. This booking requirement ensures quota management and visitor safety once the route reopens. All visitors are also required to comply with the Climbing Tourism Protocol covering safety, cleanliness, and conservation area preservation. The announcement was signed by the Head of the National Park Office, Dr. Anggit Haryoso, S.Hut., M.Sc., as the official basis for the route closure.
