Merapi Ungup-ungup Ijen Nature Reserve Hit by Fire

Forest and land fires (karhutla) have struck the Mount Ijen area, specifically within the Merapi Ungup-Ungup Nature Reserve. The flames, which have been monitored for the past three days, are now expanding, with fire points visible from several residential areas on the slopes of Ijen.

According to Purwantono, Head of the KSDA Region III Jember, fire points were detected starting around midnight on Thursday (3/9). The flames were clearly visible from a distance due to the contrast against the darkness of the peak area.

“Initial information indicates the fire points are located within the Merapi Ungup-Ungup Nature Reserve, in the upper inner section. Currently, teams on the ground are still mobilising to access the location and carry out firefighting efforts,” Purwantono stated when confirmed.

Regarding the total area affected and the number of personnel deployed, the BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Agency) has not yet provided precise details. Data collection and handling are ongoing on the ground, though efforts are hindered by minimal communication signals in the Merapi Ungup-Ungup area.

Purwantono explained that the dry season is the primary factor contributing to the fire vulnerability in the conservation area. Accumulated dry vegetation and leaves are highly flammable, especially when supported by strong winds in the highland region.

“This dry season is very high-risk. Dry vegetation, if ignited, can spread rapidly when caught by the wind,” he explained.
