Men arrested with monkey meat

JEMBER, East Java: Jember regency police foiled an attempt to smuggle monkey meat from Buleleng regency, Bali, and have declared four people suspects.

The four, who are being detained at the Temporejo Police station, have been identified as I Ketut Mika, Gusti Putu Surarja, I Wayan Widana and I Wayan Werte. All are residents of Buleleng regency.

Temporejo Police chief Adj. Comr. Rustamo said on Tuesday the four had been arrested a day earlier in Jember with 100 kilograms of monkey meat from 18 monkeys in their van.

The suspects were arrested on the way from Bali to Surabaya, the capital of East Java.

Police also confiscated a high-caliber air rifle, hammers and three butcher knives, said Rustamo.

If found guilty, the suspects could face maximum sentences of five years' imprisonment and Rp 100 million (US$12,000) fines for violating articles 21 and 22 of the Cultural Conservation Law. -- Antara
