Melia offers aid transportation
YOGYAKARTA: In a bid to help provide transportation to volunteers
collecting aid for tsunami victims in Aceh and North Sumatra
provinces, Melia Purosani hotel on Jl Suryotomo has offered the
use of its trucks free of charge.
"Any individual or institution that need trucks to transport
aid for tsunami survivors may simply contact us," Melia Purosani
PR manager Atik Damardjati said.
Atik said, however, that the trucks would only transport goods
to the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Headquarters in Jakarta and
leave the responsibility for further distribution with the PMI.
Atik also said that at present the hotel was still assisting
in channeling donations for tsunami victims. So far, she said, it
had collected over Rp 16 million in donations, about 4,000
kilograms of clothing and some 200 kg of dried food.
"We have also opened a humanitarian assistance post in front
of the Yogyakarta tourism center on Jl. Malioboro," said Atik,
adding the post would be closed only when it appeared it was no
longer needed. -- JP
