Megawati Welcomes New Leadership of Iran's Mojtaba Khamenei
Former Indonesian President and Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), Megawati Soekarnoputri, conveyed her congratulations on the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, succeeding his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The message was delivered through a letter presented to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, during a meeting at Megawati’s residence in Menteng, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
During the meeting, Megawati expressed her pleasure at the advent of new leadership in Iran. She handed the letter directly to Ambassador Boroujerdi. “This is the second letter; I am pleased that Iran now has a leader again,” Megawati said.
The meeting was also attended by several senior PDI Struggle officials, including Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto, as well as PDI Struggle Deputy Chairmen Ahmad Basarah, Yasonna Laoly, and Eriko Sotarduga. Also present was the Head of the PDI Struggle’s Research and Policy Analysis Agency, Andi Widjajanto. The meeting proceeded in a warm atmosphere with discussions lasting more than an hour.
Previously, on 3 March, Megawati also sent a letter to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to express her deepest condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following attacks by the United States and Israel. During that meeting, Megawati also presented a commemorative photograph from her official visit to Tehran in 2004, where she met directly with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as a symbol of the friendship that has developed between the two countries.
Closing the meeting, Megawati presented a souvenir to Ambassador Boroujerdi in the form of a traditional Balinese ikat weave shirt. The gift was given as a mark of respect and a symbol of friendship between Indonesia’s prominent figure and Iran’s diplomatic representative.
