Megawati Weeps While Recalling Ryamizard's Role in Aceh Disaster Response
Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, expressed deep condolences over the death of General (Retired) Ryamizard Ryacudu. Megawati wept while recalling Ryamizard’s tenure as Chief of Staff of the Army (KSAD).
Megawati remembered the late Ryamizard as a soldier with high dedication to the nation and country, and a friend always ready to assist in any situation.
“I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Ryamizard Ryacudu. May he rest in peace with God Almighty, and may his bereaved family be granted strength and resilience,” Megawati said in Jakarta on Sunday (31 May).
The former Indonesian Defence Minister (2014-2019) passed away at the age of 76 at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto hospital due to illness.
Megawati recalled that during her presidency, Ryamizard Ryacudu served as Chief of Staff of the Army (KSAD).
On various occasions, Megawati said, Ryamizard demonstrated firm, disciplined leadership and consistently prioritised the interests of the people and the nation.
According to Megawati, Ryamizard’s concern did not cease after she stepped down as president. One particularly poignant memory was during the Aceh disaster response.
At that time, after personally inspecting the affected communities, Megawati identified an urgent need for a temporary bridge to reconnect isolated areas.
“I still remember returning from Aceh and seeing the urgent need for a Bailey bridge. I immediately called Mr Ryamizard, who promptly deployed the Engineer Battalion to erect the temporary bridge, restoring public access swiftly,” Megawati recalled.
To Megawati, this swift action reflected Ryamizard’s character as a true soldier always present for the people, never hesitating to provide aid when the nation faced hardship. Ryamizard Ryacudu was a statesman-soldier who dedicated his life to loyalty towards the country and nation.
“Mr Ryamizard was a statesman-soldier. He remained steadfast in his principles, demonstrated high dedication, and maintained unwavering commitment to the nation. His life and service embodied the spirit of a true patriot,” Megawati added.
These memories and Ryamizard’s concern left a deep impression on Megawati, who bid farewell to her longtime friend.
“Farewell, my friend. Thank you for your friendship, service, and contributions to Indonesia,” Megawati concluded, her voice choked with emotion.
