Megawati to open Koran recital contest

MATARAM, East Nusa Tenggara: President Megawati Soekarnoputri
is expected to open the national Koran recital context to be held
here in July.

Djafar Suryadi, chairman of the contest's organizing
committee, said the invitation to the President for the contest's
opening ceremony had been delivered and, as was usual, the
contest was expected to be officially opened by the President.

"According to our experience in the past, the contest will
later be closed by the Vice President," he said here on Thursday.

He added that the exact dates for the contest had yet to be
set, but that around 1,200 Muslims from 30 provinces had
registered themselves to participate in the event.

Djafar, also secretary of the provincial administration,
acknowledged that it was a special honor for the province to host
the national event.

With the ensuing media exposure, more and more people would
find out about the province and more foreign tourists would
likely pay visits there, he said. -- Antara
