Megawati to meet Kim Jong Il

JAKARTA: Former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il this week to help revive stalled talks on reunification with South Korea, her staff said on Sunday.

Megawati will travel to Pyongyang for a five-day visit on Monday, her spokesman Ari Junaidi told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Kim is expected to propose a formula for reunification and to ask Megawati to discuss it with South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun when she travels to Seoul later this month, he said.

Megawati's visit, which comes amid a standoff over North Korea's nuclear weapons program, will be her second to the communist state this year.

Her late father, Indonesian strongman Sukarno, and Kim's late father, Kim Il Sung, were close friends. --AP
