Megawati Thanks President Prabowo: 56-Year Wait for Sukarno's Justice
The Chairperson of PDI Perjuangan and daughter of Indonesia’s Proclamator, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has expressed deep gratitude to President Prabowo Subianto. She shared this sentiment while opening an art exhibition titled “Mata Hati Soekarno” at Le Gareca Space, Bantul, Yogyakarta, on Saturday (6/6/2026).
This expression of thanks pertains to the government’s official step to revoke TAP MPRS Number 33 of 1967, thereby restoring the reputation of Indonesia’s first President, Sukarno (Bung Karno). Megawati revealed that she and her extended family had to endure a very long period to achieve this historical justice.
“I am grateful to Mas Bowo, the President (Prabowo Subianto). Imagine, I have been waiting for 56 years,” she stated.
She noted that Bung Karno never underwent a legal process and was never sentenced. For Megawati, the revocation of the decree is not merely an administrative matter, but a struggle to rectify a historical narrative that has remained unresolved for 56 years. She expressed regret over how her father’s legal status was left without fair legal clarity for decades, noting that during his removal from office, the public tended to remain silent, with no one daring to speak up for justice.
Megawati emphasised the importance of rectifying Indonesian history so that the younger generation can obtain a correct and objective understanding. She asserted that history must be presented honestly, without concealment.
“History is history; whether good or bad, it must be straightened out. Now, I am requesting that Indonesian history be rectified,” she insisted.
The step to restore Bung Karno’s reputation during President Prabowo Subianto’s era is expected to serve as a significant momentum for the Indonesian nation to realign past historical records for a more just and transparent future.
