Megawati Soekarnoputri Honours Ryamizard Ryacudu's Dedication to Indonesia
Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has expressed condolences over the death of retired General Ryamizard Ryacudu. The former Defence Minister (2014-2019) passed away at the age of 76 at Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital due to illness.
“I extend my deepest condolences for the passing of Pak Ryamizard Ryacudu,” Megawati said in Jakarta on Sunday, 31 May 2026. “May the late receive the best place with Almighty God, and his family be granted strength and resilience.”
Megawati recalled the late general as a soldier of high dedication to the nation and a friend always ready to assist in various situations. She remembered that during her presidency, Ryamizard served as Chief of Staff of the Army (KASAD).
In various instances, Megawati noted, Ryamizard demonstrated firm, disciplined leadership and consistently prioritised the people and national interests. His concern did not cease after her presidency ended.
One particularly vivid memory was during the Aceh disaster response. After personally inspecting affected communities, Megawati identified an urgent need for a temporary bridge to reconnect severed areas.
“I recall returning from Aceh and seeing the urgent need for a Bailey bridge. I immediately called Pak Ryamizard, who swiftly deployed a sapper battalion to erect the temporary bridge, restoring public access,” Megawati said.
For Megawati, this prompt action reflected Ryamizard’s character as a true soldier always present for the people and never hesitant to provide aid during national crises. Ryamizard Ryacudu was a statesman-soldier who remained loyal to the nation throughout his life.
“Pak Ryamizard was a statesman-soldier. He was steadfast in his principles, highly dedicated, and unwavering in his commitment to the country. His life and service embody a true patriot,” Megawati stated.
She bade farewell to her long-time friend. “Farewell, my friend. Thank you for your friendship, service, and contributions to Indonesia,” she said.
