Indonesia’s fifth President and General Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Supreme Leader of Iran. Mojtaba is succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died following an Israeli-American attack.

Megawati conveyed this message whilst receiving the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, at her residence in Menteng, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026. The letter from Megawati to Mojtaba Khamenei was handed over to Ambassador Boroujerdi.

“This is my second letter. I am pleased that Iran now has a leader again,” Megawati said as she presented the letter in a statement received by Republika on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

During the meeting, Megawati was accompanied by PDIP General Secretary Hasto Kristiyanto, along with PDIP Executive Board Chair Ahmad Basarah, Yasonna Laoly, Eriko Sotarduga, and Head of PDIP’s Research and Policy Analysis Agency, Andi Widjajanto.

Previously, on 3 March, Megawati had sent a letter to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Government expressing deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following attacks by the United States and Israel on the country.

In addition to sending the letter, Megawati presented a photograph from when she made an official visit to Tehran and met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2004. “This is evidence that I had a friendship with the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,” Megawati said.

The two spoke warmly for more than an hour. Following the meeting, while smiling, Megawati presented a gift of a Balinese ikat batik shirt to Boroujerdi.
