Megawati Sends Congratulatory Letter on Mojtaba Khamenei's Selection
The Chair of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri, presented a congratulatory letter acknowledging the selection of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei.
In a video posted on the PDIP politician’s Instagram account @gunromli, the letter was shown being handed directly by Megawati to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, who visited the fifth former president at her residence. The meeting took place on Tuesday, 10 March 2025 at Megawati’s home.
In presenting the congratulatory letter, Megawati expressed her joy at Iran having selected a new leader. She had previously, on 3 March, sent a condolence letter following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attributed to attacks by the United States and Israel.
Beyond presenting the congratulatory letter, Megawati displayed a photograph of herself with the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “This is evidence that I have a friendship relationship with the deceased,” stated the daughter of Indonesia’s first president.
Guntur Romli noted that during the meeting Megawati also presented a gift to Boroujerdi: a Balinese headscarf. The meeting between Megawati and Boroujerdi lasted approximately one hour and was attended by several senior PDIP officials including Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and DPP chairs such as Ahmad Basarah, Yasonna Laoly, Eriko Sotarduga, and Andi Widjajanto, Head of the Research and Policy Analysis Board.
On Monday, 9 March, Iran officially selected Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader. Mojtaba is the son of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He was regarded as the leading candidate ahead of the voting by the Assembly of Experts, a body comprising 88 clerics tasked with selecting a new leader following Ali Khamenei’s death. “With decisive votes, the Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the assembly stated.
