Megawati Responds to Legal Proceedings in Andrie Yunus Case
Indonesia’s fifth president and general chair of the PDI Perjuangan, Megawati Soekarnoputri, shared her views on the legal proceedings in the acid attack case involving Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, Andrie Yunus.
The statement was delivered during the Emeritus Professor Inauguration Senate Session for Prof. Dr. Arief Hidayat at Borobudur University, Jakarta, on Saturday, 2 May 2026. On that occasion, Megawati expressed her concern while questioning several aspects of the case’s handling.
“I am deeply concerned about the incident where the young man was doused with acid (Andrie Yunus). This raises a question: is the trial going to be through a military court or a civilian court?” said Megawati.
She deemed it important to have clarity in judicial mechanisms for every case, particularly to ensure that the legal process runs transparently and provides a sense of justice for all parties.
Megawati also raised the question of space for the victim to understand the legal process being pursued, including the forum handling the case.
“Should a victim be allowed to know or understand which court is handling their case? Matters like this, in my opinion, need to be considered together,” she added.
Furthermore, Megawati reminded that the principle of equality before the law is an important part of the national legal system. She assessed that this must be continuously upheld to maintain public trust in law enforcement.
“Every citizen has equal rights in the eyes of the law. This principle must be continuously upheld,” she stated.
Megawati also emphasised the importance of consistency in law enforcement to avoid diverse perceptions in society.
“The law must be something clear and provide certainty,” she concluded.
For information, in this case, four members of the Indonesian Military’s Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) have been named as suspects and are undergoing trial since Wednesday, 29 April 2026.
The Head of the TNI Information Centre (Kapuspen) TNI, Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah, stated that the legal process against the suspects is being carried out through the military court mechanism in accordance with applicable provisions.
