Megawati Puzzled Over Andrie Yunus Case Being Processed in Military Court
Jakarta - Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has questioned the case of the acid attack on Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, Andrie Yunus, being processed in a military court.
“Can’t this Yunus person request it? Doesn’t he have rights? But why is it being taken to a military court? It’s strange to me,” said Megawati during her speech at the Conferral of Emeritus Professor Title for Arief Hidayat at Borobudur University, Jakarta, on Saturday (2/5/2026).
“I’m really concerned about the issue of the child who was doused with acid. It’s funny, a question for the smart people: if it’s like that, should the trial be in a military court or a civilian court?” asked Megawati.
She questioned whether a victim can choose if their case is handled by a military or general court. Mega also touched on the matter of connected jurisdiction.
“All these smart people, please speak up from the back: how should it actually proceed if there is a court that should be connected, and why isn’t it implemented? What are the rules if rejecting it, or is there none at all,” said Megawati.
“I see Indonesia’s formal law, is it like this, just done as one pleases,” she remarked.
Megawati emphasised that every citizen has equal rights before the law, whether poor or with special needs.
Four members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS TNI) underwent the first hearing of the alleged acid attack case against KontraS Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus at the Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Wednesday (29/4/2026).
The four defendants—Serda Edi Sudarko, Lettu Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Kapten Nandala Dwi Prasetia, and Lettu Sami Lakka—were presented in open court for the first time.
In the indictment, the defendants were charged with serious assault related to the acid attack incident. They faced layered charges under Article 469 Paragraph (1) of Law Number 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023.
