General Chair of the PDI Perjuangan Central Executive Board, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has proposed the implementation of the second volume of the Asia-Africa Conference (KAA). For her, the implementation of the KAA is relevant to advocate for the sovereignty of other nations amid threats of neocolonialism.

“The implementation of the Asia-Africa Conference Volume II is highly relevant,” said the former president in an official statement at the seminar ‘71 Years of Commemorating the KAA: The Relevance of the Asia-Africa Movement in the Current Geopolitical Crisis’ at the PDI Perjuangan Party School, Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Saturday, 18 April 2026.

She stated that threats of neocolonialism and imperialism are still at work in different forms and guises in the modern era. The world, she said, needs to consider alternative ideas to create world peace. One of them is the thinking of former president Soekarno.

“The spirit of the KAA, the Non-Aligned Movement (GNB), and Soekarno’s speech ‘To Build The World A New’ provide answers on the importance of equality among nations,” she said.

Megawati assessed that the current UN structure is outdated because it was born from the constellation of World War II. According to her, a UN reform is needed.

“Through his famous speech at the UN titled ‘To Build The World a New’ on 30 September 1960, Bung Karno called for the reform or re-tooling of the UN. Equality among nations became Bung Karno’s biggest agenda,” said Megawati.

Megawati stated that the Proclaimer’s idea was to abolish the special rights of certain countries. She assessed that these special rights create global inequalities.

“In addition, the UN Charter needs to be amended by incorporating Pancasila as an international foundation,” she said.

Megawati also urged changes to the structure of the UN Security Council up to the relocation of the UN headquarters to a neutral country. According to her, the UN headquarters must be located in a place that is not part of the competition of major powers or the Cold War.

This reform is considered urgent given the turbulent global geopolitical situation. Megawati cited issues in Venezuela and attacks on Iran as evidence that the current international system is shaky.

The event was attended by PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto, PDIP Central Executive Board Chair Ahmad Basarah, Head of the Indonesian PDIP History Agency Bonnie Triyana, as well as speakers such as Prof Hikmahanto (International Relations Expert), Dr. Dina Sulaeman (Middle East Expert), Andi Widjayanto (Former Lemhanas Governor), and Heri Akhmadi (former Japanese Ambassador). The event was also attended by members of the DPR PDIP Faction and several activists, including Director of Amnesty International Indonesia Usman Hamid.
