Megawati Pays Tribute to Late Ryamizard Ryacudu for Aceh Disaster Assistance
Indonesia’s fifth president and PDIP chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri expressed deep condolences over the death of General (Retired) Ryamizard Ryacudu. Megawati remembered the former Defence Minister as a highly dedicated soldier for the nation.
“I offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Ryamizard Ryacudu. May he find peace in the hereafter and his bereaved family be granted strength and resilience,” Megawati stated on Sunday (31 May 2026).
Ryamizard passed away at the age of 76 at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto Hospital due to illness. Megawati recalled that during her presidency, Ryamizard Ryacudu served as Chief of Staff of the Army (KASAD).
Megawati noted that Ryamizard consistently demonstrated firm leadership, discipline, and prioritised the interests of the people and nation.
Megawati said Ryamizard’s concern did not wane after her presidency ended. One particularly memorable instance was during the Aceh disaster response. After personally inspecting the affected communities, Megawati identified an urgent need for a temporary bridge to reconnect isolated areas. Ryamizard’s response left a lasting impression on her.
“I remember returning from Aceh and seeing the urgent need for a Bailey bridge. I immediately called Mr Ryamizard, who swiftly deployed the Engineering Battalion to erect the temporary bridge, restoring public access,” Megawati said.
Megawati said this swift action reflected Ryamizard’s character as a soldier always ready to serve the people. She added that throughout his life, Ryamizard demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the nation and country.
“Mr Ryamizard was a statesman-soldier. He was steadfast in his principles, highly dedicated, and showed unflagging commitment to the nation. His life and service epitomised a true patriot,” Megawati said.
