Megawati Mourns Ryamizard's Passing, Recalls Aceh Disaster Response
Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has expressed deep condolences over the passing of former Defence Minister General (Retired) Ryamizard Ryacudu. Megawati remembered the late general as a soldier with high dedication to the nation and country.
“I extend my deepest sympathies on the passing of Mr Ryamizard Ryacudu. May he rest in peace with the Almighty and his bereaved family be granted strength and resilience,” Megawati stated on Sunday, 31 May 2026.
Megawati recalled her tenure as President when Ryamizard served as Chief of Staff of the Army (KASAD). She noted his firm, disciplined leadership and unwavering prioritisation of public welfare.
According to Megawati, Ryamizard’s concern for the nation continued even after her presidency. One poignant memory was his response to the Aceh disaster.
At that time, affected communities urgently needed temporary bridges to reconnect severed areas. Megawati stated that Ryamizard swiftly acted to erect the bridges.
“I still remember returning from Aceh and seeing the urgent need for Bailey bridges. I immediately called Mr Ryamizard, who promptly deployed the Engineering Battalion to install the temporary bridges, restoring public access swiftly,” Megawati recalled.
For Megawati, this swift action exemplified Ryamizard’s character as a soldier always present for the people. He was known as a statesman who demonstrated loyalty to the nation.
“Mr Ryamizard was a soldier-statesman. He remained steadfast in his principles, showed high dedication, and maintained an unyielding commitment to the country. His life and service embody a true patriot,” Megawati said.
It is known that Ryamizard passed away today, succumbing at 14:01 WIB at RSPAD Gatot Subroto Hospital in Central Jakarta.
“Farewell, my friend. Thank you for your friendship, service, and contributions to Indonesia,” she added.
