Megawati Mourns Death of Ryamizard Ryacudu: Statesman-Soldier
Former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri expressed deep condolences over the death of former Defence Minister General TNI (Retired) Ryamizard Ryacudu today, Sunday, 31 May 2026.
She described Ryamizard as a dedicated soldier and loyal friend always ready to assist in various circumstances.
“I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Ryamizard Ryacudu. May he find the best place with Almighty God, and may his bereaved family be granted strength and resilience,” Megawati stated on Sunday, 31 May 2026.
Megawati recalled Ryamizard Ryacudu serving as Army Chief of Staff during her presidency.
On various occasions, Ryamizard demonstrated firm, disciplined leadership and consistently prioritised the interests of the people and the nation.
Megawati noted Ryamizard’s continued dedication even after her presidency. One poignant memory was during the Aceh disaster response.
After personally assessing the disaster-affected communities, Megawati identified an urgent need for a Bailey bridge to reconnect severed areas.
“I still recall returning from Aceh and seeing the urgent need for a Bailey bridge. I immediately called Mr Ryamizard, who swiftly deployed the Engineering Battalion to erect the temporary bridge, restoring public access,” Megawati recounted.
To Megawati, this swift action exemplified Ryamizard’s character as a true soldier always present for the people, never hesitating to assist during national crises. Ryamizard Ryacudu was a statesman-soldier whose lifelong loyalty to the nation and country was unwavering.
“Mr Ryamizard was a statesman-soldier. He remained steadfast in his principles, displayed high dedication, and showed unwavering commitment to the nation. His life and service embodied the essence of a true patriot,” Megawati said.
These memories and Ryamizard’s attentiveness left a lasting impression on Megawati, who bid farewell to her long-time friend.
