Megawati Laughs as She Watches Impersonation Contest of Herself

Indonesia’s fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri, was seen laughing as she watched a contestant impersonate her during a competition. The participant mimicked her speaking style and intonation.

The moment occurred during the Bung Karno Festival at Taman Proklamasi in Central Jakarta on Saturday (20/6/2026). The contestant delivered several quotes identical to Megawati’s speeches, including remarks about her friendship with President Prabowo Subianto.

‘Merdeka! Mr Prabowo is my friend, but that does not mean we have to be separated. If we are friends, we are friends, but when it comes to politics, we must be able to distinguish,’ the participant said in front of Megawati.

He continued with a message about democracy and differing political views. ‘What is politics for? Politics is for democratisation. I am not Mr Prabowo’s enemy. He is my friend. Thank you,’ he added.

The performance immediately drew the attention of visitors. Cheers and applause were heard from various sides of the festival arena. Meanwhile, Megawati, who watched from the guest seats, smiled broadly. The chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) was seen laughing several times at the contestant’s imitation of her speaking style and body gestures.
