Jakarta - PDI-Perjuangan General Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri has instructed the PDI-P faction in the House of Representatives to evaluate the national railway system following the fatal accident at Bekasi Timur Station in West Java.

“Mother Megawati has asked all members of the PDI Perjuangan Commission V Working Committee in the House of Representatives, led by Mr Lasarus, to hold a meeting to carry out improvements to the railway security system, communication system, and instrumentation system,” said PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto in a written statement on Wednesday (29/4/2026).

Hasto said the instruction was given after Megawati followed the developments in handling the accident victims through media reports.

“She is so saddened. Mother Megawati prays for all the accident victims, especially those called by God, that their journey is smooth and they receive the best place in heaven,” Hasto stated.

He added that Megawati considers the tragedy a momentum to reform the national transportation system, particularly the railway sector.

“Mother Megawati hopes that in the future, trains will become the backbone of a national transportation system that is safe, comfortable, on time, and provides quality service and security guarantees for all Indonesian people,” he concluded.

The Ministry of Transportation revealed that the accident at Bekasi Timur began with an incident at a level crossing.

Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi explained that the Bekasi-Cikarang route commuter train was hit by an electric taxi at crossing JPL 85.

“Based on the initial chronology, the accident incident began when the Bekasi-Cikarang route commuter train was hit by a vehicle at the JPL 85 level crossing,” Dudy said.

The Ministry of Transportation emphasised that the exact cause of the accident is still awaiting the results of the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT).

Police data records that the accident killed 15 passengers and caused dozens of others to be injured.
