Megawati Instructs PDI Perjuangan in West Java to Rescue Animals at Bandung Zoo
PDI Perjuangan chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri has instructed all party ranks in West Java to mobilise in rescuing the animals at Bandung Zoo. This step comes in response to deep concerns over the fate of the animals threatened by an unresolved management conflict.
West Java PDI Perjuangan DPD chairman Ono Surono revealed that Megawati has given special attention to ensure animal welfare does not become a victim of the management dispute.
“The chairwoman specifically directed that the prolonged Bandung Zoo conflict must not sacrifice the welfare of the animals there,” he said in Bandung on Monday (30/3).
Ono stated that Megawati, who also serves as Chair of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Advisory Board, once floated the option of relocating the animals to Ragunan Zoo or Surabaya Zoo. However, following the deaths of two Bengal tiger cubs earlier this week, Megawati deemed the bureaucratic relocation process too time-consuming without accompanying emergency actions.
As a short-term solution, she ordered the fundraising of donations and community mutual assistance through an adoptive parent scheme. The funds will be allocated for feed, healthcare costs, and cage cleanliness.
“The chairwoman’s direct order is for all cadres, both in the legislature and executive, to join in mutual assistance to meet feed needs. I have already discussed with management to detail the number of animals and monthly costs required,” he explained.
As follow-up, the West Java PDI Perjuangan DPD will coordinate monthly dues from cadres starting April 2026. The amounts vary, from Rp500,000 for district/city DPRD members to Rp5 million for DPD chairmen and regional heads.
Ono emphasised that for PDI Perjuangan, politics is not just about power, but also care for the ecosystem.
“Mrs Mega stressed that feed and health are the top priorities. After that, the relocation option will still be pursued in parallel,” he added.
Ono also urged relevant ministries to take immediate tactical steps. If the government is slow in handling this animal welfare crisis, the public and party will take the initiative first.
“If the government is not ready, then we are ready to do it. We must ensure the animals at Bandung Zoo receive proper care,” said the West Java Provincial DPRD Deputy Chairman.
