Megawati: Easter a moment to embody the spirit of sacrifice

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s fifth president, Megawati Soekarnoputri, described Easter as a moment to rekindle the spirit of sacrifice and boundless love for one’s fellow human beings. “Every commemoration of Easter reminds us of the boundless outpouring of love, in the spirit of sacrifice on the Way of the Cross of Jesus Christ,” said Megawati in a statement received in Jakarta on Sunday. The General Chair of the PDI Perjuangan Central Executive Board extended Easter greetings for 2026 to all Christians in Indonesia. Indonesia’s first female president stated that through the series of Holy Triduum—Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday—Christians are invited to deeply reflect on the work of redemption. “Easter is the path of liberation that frees humanity from darkness, becoming light and love,” she remarked. The daughter of the Proclaimer of Indonesia’s Independence underscored the importance of religious spiritual values as a foundation in national and state life. “As a nation that is pious to God, all religious spiritual values become the light that illuminates the Indonesian nation,” said Megawati. In addition to delivering the Easter message and greetings, Megawati prayed that God’s grace would always envelop all Indonesian people in peace and brotherhood. “Once again, happy Easter, and may God’s grace always accompany our beloved Indonesian nation. Peace and prosperity greetings to us all, Shalom,” said Megawati.
