Megawati and Ramos-Horta meet to discuss science, technology and humanitarian issues
The agenda is expected to run smoothly and serve as a momentum for exchanging ideas on scientific developments and various current issues.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s 5th President and Chairperson of the PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) Central Executive Board, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta held a meeting to discuss various matters concerning science and technology as well as humanitarian issues at the Megawati Institute in Menteng, Jakarta, on Friday.
PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto said the meeting was expected to provide an open dialogue space on the advancement of science and technology, as well as the various challenges accompanying its development for human life.
“It is hoped that today’s agenda will proceed smoothly and become a momentum for exchanging ideas on scientific developments and various current issues. Moreover, those present include Nobel and Turing laureates in their respective fields. They are the poets of knowledge,” Hasto said in Jakarta on Friday.
President Ramos-Horta led the delegation on his visit to Jakarta to meet Megawati and a number of figures in Indonesian research and science.
In total, the meeting was attended by 10 Nobel laureates, one of whom is Ramos-Horta, one representative from a Nobel-winning organisation, and 4 Turing Award recipients.
“They have just spoken at the Science for Development Summit 2026 forum in Dili, Timor-Leste. President Ramos-Horta brought the entire delegation to meet Ibu Megawati and the leadership of the national research agency,” Hasto said.
Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, who appeared to be wearing a blue batik shirt, arrived at around 12.10 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. Megawati, who appeared to be accompanied by her son M. Pranada Prabowo and his wife Nancy Prananda, was seen welcoming President Ramos-Horta’s arrival.
Megawati appeared to greet him with a warm smile as she watched Ramos-Horta walk towards the entrance of the Megawati Institute building.
Megawati was also seen holding Ramos-Horta’s hand and leading him towards the balcony at the entrance of the Megawati Institute building. A photo session was then held in front of the journalists present at the location.
After the photo session, Megawati again held Ramos-Horta’s hand and led him into the meeting room.
Shortly afterwards, the group of Nobel and Turing Award laureates who are part of the Science for Development Summit 2026 delegation were seen arriving at the Megawati Institute building. Hasto, together with party officials, welcomed the arrival of the Nobel laureate delegates.
The event then began with a lunch meeting format, followed by a roundtable discussion.
Megawati, Ramos-Horta, and a number of Nobel and Turing Award laureates were to present their views in an idea exchange forum on the development of science, technology, and its impact on humans and humanity. The discussion was moderated directly by the Executive Director of the Megawati Institute, Hilmar Farid.
