Mega tells TNI, police to safeguard election

TIMIKA, Papua: President Megawati Soekarnoputri asked security agencies on Sunday to do their utmost to ensure the success of the country's first ever direct presidential election on July 5.

"Likewise, the people must try to ensure that the polls run peacefully," said Megawati, who was here to inaugurate a number of projects including the Graha Eme Neme Yauware building and an integrated health center.

Megawati, who is seeking a full five-year term, has chosen Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) chairman Hasyim Muzadi as her running mate.

"I hope that the people will help make the presidential election a success, and not because Hasyim Muzadi and I have been nominated," she said.

"Thank God, the first phase of the general election (the legislative election on April 5) ran peacefully," she said. --Antara
