Mega rejects direct election?

From Rakyat Merdeka

Party and mass organization leaders are still debating whether or not the next presidential election is a direct one. It was stipulated in the amendment to 1945 Constitution last year that this presidential election would be a direct one. There are debates on the second round: let the people decide or the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).

Suddenly, Megawati, as general chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, made her political move when she said she rejected the amendment that the MPR had decided.

Obviously, this is the result of the strong influence of democracy of guardianship fostered by the New Order.

It is really horrible to imagine that these people are still active in the political arena as their political activities are intended to preserve their own power.

These people are ready to seize the people's sovereignty by rejecting a direct presidential election on the grounds that our democracy is the democracy of guardianship. Obviously, the political guardians are political party leaders. Our legislators obey their party leaders more than the conscience of the people they supposedly represent.

If our democracy remains like this, let us all boycott the upcoming election. A general election will be useless as the result will be political parties adhering to the New Order's democracy of guardianship.
