Meeting with Pertamina CEO, Purbaya Ensures More Targeted Distribution of Pertalite and 3 kg LPG
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa revealed that discussions are underway regarding the use of technology to ensure the distribution of subsidised fuel and 3 kilogramme LPG canisters is more targeted. The discussion took place during a meeting with Pertamina CEO Simon Aloysius Mantiri at the Ministry of Finance office. "The main thing is how, perhaps I want to know what technology will be used to limit—not limit, but to ensure the subsidy is on target," Purbaya said at the Ministry of Finance building in Jakarta on Friday, 24 July 2026. Purbaya explained that his party wants to ensure that subsidised fuel can be enjoyed by the people who are entitled to receive it, so that the distribution volume can also be controlled. He noted that currently, subsidised fuels such as Pertalite and 3 kg LPG are still widely used by upper-middle-class groups. "Everyone, even the wealthy, can also take Pertalite or gas, for example. He has technology, I want to see what the technology is like, what the implementation is like," Purbaya stated. When asked about the potential to raise subsidised fuel prices in line with rising global crude oil prices, Purbaya confirmed that there were no discussions on the matter and assured that subsidised fuel prices would be maintained at their current level. "No. What we are ensuring is that the subsidy is on target, so the volume can be controlled. Later, if that happens, we will wait for Pertamina to propose something; I will look at other matters later," Purbaya said. Previously, the government was preparing a new scheme for distributing subsidised fuel to make it more targeted, including restrictions on the purchase of subsidised Pertalite and diesel. The restrictions will be based on vehicle type and engine capacity. In line with this, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is revising Presidential Regulation Number 191 of 2014 concerning the Provision, Distribution, and Retail Selling Price of Fuel. Additionally, the government is preparing a transformation of the 3 kg LPG subsidy from a commodity-based scheme to a beneficiary-based scheme, where distribution will refer to data from the Targeting for the Acceleration of Extreme Poverty Elimination and the Integrated Social Welfare Data.
