Meeting with Law Minister, Digital Platforms Declare Commitment to Support Child Protection Regulations
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas received an audience from a delegation of the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) along with representatives from global technology companies, such as Meta, Google, Apple, and Salesforce. The audience discussed strengthening cooperation in the field of digital regulation, child protection, and the development of a technology-based creative economy ecosystem. Supratman explained that the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkum) has a strategic role in preparing and overseeing, especially amid the rapid digital transformation at present. Based on 2025 data, there are around 240 million active internet users in Indonesia, of which 70 million are children under the age of 16. This situation prompts the government to establish policies restricting social media access for children, regulated in Minister of Communication and Digital Regulation Number 9 of 2026, which takes effect on 28 March 2026. In addition to child protection issues, Kemenkum is also promoting fair royalty justice for creative industry players. The government is striving to create more equitable and transparent royalty distribution governance, particularly in the global digital ecosystem. Furthermore, Supratman also urged attention to artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure economic value for media. “Our main goal is to protect creators and ensure a balance in the distribution of economic value. Indonesia is a large market with high potential, so there needs to be a joint commitment from the industry,” Supratman emphasised. He also affirmed the USABC’s commitment, which oversees around 180 companies across sectors, to support the implementation of policies and strengthen communication with the Indonesian Government. “We are ready to be a strategic partner to the Indonesian Government in creating a healthy and sustainable business ecosystem, including supporting economic growth targets,” stated Mealy. Similar support was conveyed by Meta Indonesia representative Rendy Novalianto and Google Indonesia’s Putri Alam, Director of Government Affairs & Public Policy. In response, Supratman emphasised that the government is open to dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders. “Indonesia is an open country. In the regulatory harmonisation process, we will continue to involve various parties to achieve a balanced meeting point between protection and business interests,” Supratman explained. This audience serves as an important momentum in strengthening synergy between the Indonesian government and international partners, to encourage the creation of adaptive, inclusive, and just regulations in the digital era.
