Meeting with Academics, Prabowo: Do Not Misunderstand, I Respect Experts
President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised that he holds experts in high regard, addressing public perceptions that he does not respect specialists. This statement was made during a meeting where he invited academics and experts to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday (24/09/2026).
Opening the discussion, Prabowo highlighted a critical national issue: the recurring annual forest and land fires (karhutla) occurring on peatlands. On this occasion, he requested that experts provide recommendations to implement effective prevention measures to stop these fires from happening every year.
“Gentlemen, as experts, please advise me on the best steps to prevent fires in forest areas. Firstly, and secondly, in forest areas containing peat,” he stated, identifying two key areas of concern.
He also requested suggestions from the experts on how peatlands can be utilised more productively.
Prabowo further clarified that he holds specialists in great esteem, noting that he is aware of public assumptions to the contrary.
“So, my colleagues, do not misunderstand what you hear. Sometimes when I speak to an audience, my words are twisted to suggest that I do not respect experts. I respect experts above all. Regardless of anything else, the reason I succeeded as an officer is because I always seek out experts,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo concluded by requesting that the experts provide continuous input during the discussion, which took place on Thursday evening.
