Istanbul — Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for long-term strategic cooperation with Russia to build a more just and equitable global governance system, during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Wednesday, 20 May, Anadolu Agency reported, citing Xinhua News Agency. Xi said the current global situation is ‘complex and volatile’ due to the rising ‘unilateral hegemony’, but peace, development and cooperation remain the world’s primary aspirations, according to Xinhua. He also urged closer comprehensive strategic coordination between China and Russia to promote the development of both countries. According to Xi, the China-Russia relationship is growing stronger as political trust and strategic cooperation expand, amid broader ties across sectors and joint efforts to uphold fairness and equality in international affairs. Putin began a two-day visit to China on Tuesday, a few days after U.S. President Donald Trump completed a three-day visit and attended a summit with Xi. Putin’s visit coincided with the 25th anniversary of the China-Russia Treaty of Friendship and Neighborliness. The treaty, signed in 2001 by Putin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin, was extended on Wednesday.
