Meeting Prabowo, German President: Indonesia a Stability Factor in ASEAN
President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that during his meeting with President Prabowo Subianto, they agreed on the importance of a rules-based world order. Steinmeier emphasised Indonesia’s vital role in the ASEAN region.
“And we mutually agree that we support a world based on fixed rules. We also support the elements of the UN Charter. The European and Asia-Pacific regions and the situation there can only be considered and deliberated together,” Steinmeier said at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (15/6/2026).
Steinmeier noted that Europe closely observes conditions in the Indo-Pacific. On this point, he highlighted the important role of ASEAN as part of the Indo-Pacific.
“We in Europe are very closely observing what is happening in the Indo-Pacific. And we see the important role of ASEAN in developing the security architecture in this region,” Steinmeier stated.
Further, Steinmeier assessed that Indonesia is a crucial stability factor for ASEAN. Beyond security, he noted Indonesia’s significant role regarding the environment.
“And Indonesia is an important stability factor within the ASEAN region. We see that Indonesia is not only confident in that role but is increasingly developing this important role. This includes security politics as well as environmental protection and so on,” he added.
Prabowo previously remarked that Steinmeier’s visit held great significance for Indonesia, as it took place amid global uncertainty.
“This is a great honour for us. This state visit carries very important meaning for Indonesia because it also demonstrates the excellent relations between Germany and Indonesia,” said Prabowo.
“This visit is also an important momentum amidst increasingly uncertain global dynamics,” he stressed.
