Vice President Gibran Rakabuming conveyed an apology when meeting victims of the NTT earthquake at an evacuation post at Gelora Samador Stadium, Maumere, on Thursday afternoon (20/08/2026). The Vice President acknowledged that there are still many shortcomings on the part of the government in restoring the post-disaster situation that struck the region last weekend.

“I also apologise profusely if, up to now, there are still many shortcomings on the ground. Public safety is the top priority. Therefore, all emergency response measures must prioritise the safety and fulfilment of the community’s urgent needs,” he said.

Vice President Gibran stressed that the public will not be left to face the impact of the disaster alone. He has asked central and regional government officials to ensure that aid reaches all affected communities, especially those in hard-to-access areas such as settlements in the mountains.

“This is the responsibility of the state. I also ask that special attention be given to pregnant and breastfeeding women, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and children. They must be registered, monitored, and receive assistance according to their needs,” he urged.

To the evacuees, Vice President Gibran advised them not to return to their damaged homes for the time being, given that the potential for aftershocks remains high.

While in NTT to inspect post-disaster recovery, the Vice President also observed a number of Psychology students from the University of Indonesia who accompanied him, providing psychosocial support through trauma healing activities for children affected by the disaster. The students engaged the children in singing and guessing games to help create a more comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere.
