TANGERANG — As industry and society increasingly need relevant innovation, collaboration between universities and stakeholders has become more important to ensure research does not remain confined to laboratories but can be developed into practical solutions.

In response, Binus University has launched the Multihelix Hub at Binus @BSD, located in the D-HUB Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in BSD, Tangerang. The initiative provides a forum for collaboration among academics, industry, government, communities, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and the media to promote research-based innovation that can address real challenges in society.

Managed by Binus University’s Research and Technology Transfer (RTT), the Multihelix Hub is designed as a collaborative space where partners can set out their needs and challenges, then work with Binus researchers to design, develop and test relevant solutions.

Binus University Vice-Rector for Research and Technology Transfer Prof Juneman Abraham stressed the importance of building an open innovation ecosystem involving a range of stakeholders.

“Unlike conventional Science and Technology Parks (STPs), which are often bureaucratic, the BINUS@BSD Multihelix Hub breaks down barriers between research and industry to democratise innovation at the centre of BSD’s technology ecosystem and Indonesia’s Special Economic Zone. Through agile applied co-creation rooted in the collective intelligence of industry, digital talent and society, the hub transforms all the helixes from transactional relationships into drivers of shared progress, with sovereignty and equal empowerment. This organic partnership ensures a sustainable competitive advantage for every innovation,” Juneman said in a press release on Thursday (22 October 2026).

To support collaboration, the Multihelix Hub provides facilities for discussion and innovation development through Binus DigiHub and Space to Create, which includes laboratory space and facilities for producing and testing prototypes.

The ecosystem is also supported by Binus Bridge (Binus Research-Driven Innovation and Development for Greater Empowerment), a digital platform connecting Binus research and innovation with the needs of industry, government and community partners. Through the platform, partners can explore available innovations and propose collaboration opportunities to develop with researchers.

The Multihelix Hub will also facilitate innovation testing, provide support for research-based start-ups, and introduce research findings to the public. Through Industrial-Solution Matching, BINUS aims to foster collaborations that can be developed into joint research and innovation projects.

As an initial step, Binus, through RTT, is targeting seven to eight joint-research agreements with industry in 2026. These are expected to include research roadmaps and financing plans to support the implementation of solutions.

Binus University Technology Transfer Senior Specialist Hendy Risdianto Wijaya said the Multihelix Hub gives industry the opportunity to take part directly in developing research-based solutions.

“Companies with technical challenges or innovation needs can submit them through Binus Bridge or visit the Multihelix Hub in person. We then connect those needs with researchers who have the relevant expertise, so the collaboration can develop into solutions ready to be tested and implemented,” Hendy said.

The Multihelix Hub forms part of Binus University’s commitment to strengthening a research and innovation ecosystem that delivers tangible impact. In line with its vision, ‘Fostering and Empowering the Society in Building and Serving the Nation’, BINUS aims to ensure that knowledge, technology and innovation developed at the university contribute to industrial progress, community empowerment and Indonesia’s development.
