Meeting in Beijing, Trump Repeatedly Praises Xi Jinping
US President Donald Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping as a great leader. This was stated by Trump during his visit to Beijing on Thursday (14/5/2026). Trump also expressed his optimism for the future of relations between the two countries. “It is an honour to be with you. It is an honour to be your friend, and the relationship between China and the US will be better than ever before,” said Trump during the meeting with Xi in Beijing, as reported by Anadolu Agency and TRT World. This meeting took place after Trump attended a grand welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. “We have a fantastic relationship. We stay in harmony when there are difficulties, we solve them,” Trump said to Xi. During the meeting in Beijing, Trump repeatedly praised Xi’s leadership and China’s development under his administration. “I greatly respect China, the work you have done. You are a great leader,” Trump said, offering praise to Xi. “I tell everyone. You are a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like me saying it, but I still say it, because it is true,” said Trump. This visit by Trump marks the first official visit by a US President to China in the last decade. Trump himself last visited Beijing in 2017, during his first term. Trump also highlighted what he called a strong personal relationship with Xi. He said the two leaders consistently manage tensions through direct communication. “I will call you, and you will call me, and every time we have a problem – people don’t know – every time we have a problem, we solve it very quickly,” said Trump. “And we will have a fantastic future together,” he added. Previously, Xi told Trump that the two countries should be “partners and not rivals” when they met in Beijing. In talks with Trump, Xi said he was “pleased” to welcome the US President, who last came to Beijing in 2017 – during Trump’s first term. “A stable China-US relationship is a blessing for the world. Cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both. We should be partners and not rivals,” Xi said to Trump during the meeting.
