Medical team to Afghanistan

JAKARTA: The Indonesian chapter of the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) International will soon send a medical team to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area to provide medical services for Afghan refugees following the United States-led military attacks, an official said on Tuesday.

Chairman of AMDA in Indonesia A. Husni Tanra said in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar that the country's AMDA medical team would join those of Japan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The doctors involved in the AMDA medical team who will leave for the Afghanistan-Pakistan border this month are Hasbullah, Muhammad Yunus, Taufik, Taqwa and a university student, he said.

Husni said the medical team will be led by Idrus Paturusi.

Meanwhile, Paturusi said that problems delaying the transportation of medical supplies meant the team was unable to carry supplies from Indonesia.

"Thus, the medical team will not be able to prepare the medical supplies until after they arrive at the border," he said.

The Indonesian chapter of AMDA has been active in providing medical services for victims of natural disasters as well as for refugees both at home and abroad, including those in East Nusa Tenggara, Ambon (capital of Maluku province) and Ternate (capital of North Maluku province) as well as in Malaysia's Serawak. -- Antara
